PSE5 Basics
Opening a file

To start with a layout, open the file you are going to use for the background and any elements you would like to use. You can now drag the open elements onto your page. You do this by holding the mouse button down on the image and dragging it towards the background page. Make sure the background page is open like the image below.

Use the move tool to rotate and resize elements and photos to fit frames/pages.

To turn your photo b/w. I used the newspaper setting for my photo this time.

To apply themes to your image and this is what I did with the one I am using in this tutorial. I went and applied sepia tone to my photo.

When you apply themes you will have a star like image appear on the layer. Double click this to open more options, have fun playing around in here. This is where you can make drop shadows look real and to soften them. Harsh/dark drop shadows don't always look good on a layout.

To simplify a layer after applying themes; you right click your mouse and a box will pop up where you can select simplify layer.

When you have added text you can change the options eg size and colour by double clicking on the letter T in the layer

Changing text size. If you want a higher value, type your own number in the box shown below. I have typed in 450px since the highest default is only 72px.

Saving your Layout
Merge the layers OPTIONAL

To save for printing; use the settings. We are saving as a .jpg in the below image.

Another option of saving your image for printing is to save it in .tif. I like this format better than .jpg, I think the image is sharper. But make sure where you are printing can take .tif files

Saving the image to used on the web; select the option under file. The below image will pop up; resize your image 500 or 600px. I usually do mine at 500px. Make sure the boxes are ticked.

Setting the resolution
Handy thing to know

Here is the layout I made for this tutorial.
